I remember my first ever coaching symposium back in 2000 in Kloten, Switzerland. It was possibly the most memorable educational ice hockey opportunity I had the pleasure to attend. At the time I was representing the EIHA Coaching programme with a group of other coaches.
"You’re always on your way to becoming a great coach" was something I was told by Pierre Page during his presentation. Pierre at the time was a Scout in the NHL for the Minnesota Wild having been an Assistant Coach and Head Coach during a lengthy career in the NHL from 1980 to 1998.
This is what led me to realising how important a Growth Mindset was - I am a firm believer that you can learn so much from other coaches and professionals during your hockey and life journey. This learning can really help you to formulate your own ideas as you develop yourself and others around you.
In July 2023 I met with Simon Hopkins someone who I have known through hockey and worked with for well over 17 years. We travelled the world together to international competitions leading the Great Britain Mens Universities Ice Hockey Team at 5 Winter Universiades between 2007 and 2019.
Simon was keen to bring his knowledge and commitment to the sport assisting me to pull together my first ever ice hockey coaching symposium in my hometown, Nottingham.
Nottingham is a prime location and a real ice hockey hot bed being home to the Nottingham Panthers as well as the Nottingham Ice Hockey Club. A club that is very dear to my heart having grown up playing as a junior back in the 1980's at the old Nottingham Ice Stadium.
The main aim was to bring together a team of professional coaches, subject matter experts and special guest speakers. To cover and discuss the latest thinking, methods and practices in sports coaching. The workshops aren’t just specific to ice hockey coaches and many of the workshops carry transferable skills for ice hockey managers and coaches from other sports.
People attending the Coaching Symposium taking place on 13/14 July will gain insight into methodologies and strategies, to enhance their skills. The symposium will bring the opportunity for delegates from across the country and overseas to share together their own valuable experiences and network over the weekend in the fantastic setting of the University of Nottingham.
More announcements of guest speakers and coaches delivering additional workshops over the weekend will be made over the coming weeks.
